THE GOLDEN AGE
During the early 90s the G Funk style of hip hop emerged from Los Angeles, combining melodic elements of Motown, Funk, and R&B with socially-aware gangsta rap. For the first time in history, a hip-hop album debuted at #1 on the pop charts and the genre became a staple of mainstream American culture. But who were the true originators of this movement that commercialized rap music?
THE BIG 3
The movement began with Warren G, Snoop Dogg, and Nate Dogg. As childhood friends, they formed the group 213 and early in the film’s development we came across archival tapes of the trio. The never-before-seen footage, along with stylized storytelling sequences, gave the film a unique approach to the subject matter.
The film premiered at BFI London, SXSW and won the Calgary Film Festival. It was sold to YouTube Originals in 2018.
